The Greens have pre-selected former Mayor of Marrickville Sam Byrne to be their candidate in the inner western Sydney seat of Grayndler at the forthcoming Federal election. Mr Byrne will be standing against Labor factional warrior and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Mr Anthony Albanese.
"The Greens will be running hard this election on the issues where the Labor Government has failed and the Liberal Party are the same or worse," said Mr Byrne.Read more...
After demanding local councils put up $140,000 to pay for a feasibility study into the extension of light rail in the Inner West, the NSW Government is now asking councils to put that money toward the environmental assessment of the project.
Premier Kristina Keneally announced last week the extension of the light rail from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill, and from Haymarket to Circular Quay as part of the Government’s Metropolitan Transport Plan.Read more...
The New Year has seen an increased focus at Council on the delivery on important projects and careful management of our budget. I am delighted to report that our record of delivering significant infrastructure projects to the community on time and under budget is continuing.
Adding to our success with the $7 million aquatic centre and $4 million Balmain library upgrade the $5 million extension of the Council administration building is progressing on time and we estimate will come in under budget in excess of $500,000.Read more...

It's a pity that this decision comes after hundreds of millions of dollars of public funds have been wasted along with a great deal of stress for out community.

Premier Kristina Kenneally's transport announcement will do little to restore confidence in the NSW government as Labor has had a decade of failed public transport plans Greens MP Lee Rhiannon and Leichhardt Mayor Jamie Parker said today.
"While the Metro Transport Plan looks good on paper the Premier has to do a lot more than just make a high profile announcement," Ms Rhiannon said.Read more...
THE Keneally government's transport masterplan is set to rehash old announcements, with minor additions to the CityRail network, secret government documents reveal.
While the government prepares to announce tomorrow that it will build a north-west rail link, it asks voters to take it on trust, because work would not begin until 2014 at the earliest.
The news comes as five consortia bidding for the $5.3 billion CBD Metro received letters from the Metro Authority telling them to stop work immediately. The authority told them it would provide further directions when the government makes an imminent announcement about the transport plan.Read more...
NSW Education Minister Verity Firth has failed to stop bureaucrats vandalising a world-leading school and residential health service for rural and remote children with learning difficulties, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Commenting on a story on page 1 of today's Sydney Morning Herald ('Keneally slammed on school closure'), Dr Kaye said: "The future of Dalwood diagnosis and Palm Ave school are now mired in confusion, thanks to Verity Firth losing control over the education bureaucracy.Read more...

LONG-DISTANCE travellers are the winners in a massive shake-up of public transport fares, with the cost of some train journeys halved and standard ticketing for public and private buses.
But government bus and ferry commuters in inner and middle suburbs of Sydney face hefty price hikes of up to $300 a year as almost 200 different types of fares are streamlined to 30, under the new MyZone fare structure announced by the state government yesterday.Read more...
The recent surprise announcement by NSW Premier Kristina Keneally that property acquisitions for the CBD Metro in Rozelle had been put on hold has people in the area very excited – and confused.
Just ask proprietor of the threatened Adore Pharmacy in Rozelle, Chadi Tahan, who has ridden a rollercoaster ride of uncertainty these last few months about the fate of his recently-renovated business. “We haven’t been told formally yet [about their plans] – we have only heard about it from newspaper reports, and they all have conflicting stories,” he said. “We don’t know what to do. The Premier said the property acquisition has been put on hold, but that the final decision will be made in late February. That doesn’t help us in any way.”Read more...
Cr Michele McKenzie - Acting Mayor, Leichhardt Council
I would like the residents of Lilyfield and Rozelle to know that the Greens did not vote for the Tigers rezoning, do not support the scale of this development and have fought this over development along with the community since 2004.
The huge community campaign against the rezoning should have worked but Labor, Independents and one liberal councillor at the time were determined that it be approved.Read more...
CITYRAIL has undercut one of the main justifications for the Government's planned $5.3 billion CBD Metro by insisting there is spare capacity on its trains, including those to western Sydney.
The Sydney Metro Authority, which is responsible for overseeing the seven-kilometre line between Central and Rozelle, claims commuters need more services between the city and Parramatta than the existing heavy rail network can supply.Read more...
