| Government Responds To Greens’ Pressure To Protect Renters |
|
The government’s announcement that it will introduce legislation to protect tenants from immediate eviction when a landlord defaults on a mortgage was welcomed today by Sylvia Hale, NSW Greens MP and Housing spokesperson, who last month gave notice that she would introduce a private members bill to address the same issue.
“The announcement that the government will legislate to protect tenants from eviction without notice when a bank repossesses a home is welcome but I will be urging the government to extend the proposed 4 weeks notice period,” Ms Hale said.

“Tenants need this protection urgently given the emerging impacts of the recession. Throwing families out onto the street is not acceptable.”
“Under the current law, often the first a tenant knows about a mortgage default is when they find an eviction notice stuck to the door, followed soon after by a visit from the Sheriff. Tenants can get little or no warning, if the owner hasn’t told them or has misled them about the state of the mortgage.”
Ms Hale gave notice in the parliament on 7 May 2009 that she would introduce a Private Members Bill (Residential Tenancies Amendment (Mortgage Default - Tenant Protection) Bill) to protect tenants from immediate eviction when a landlord defaults on a mortgage.
“The Government promised it was going to fix this over a year ago, but to date it has failed to deliver. It is good to see the government finally taking this important step.
“This is a law we urgently need, as the recession leads to more people defaulting on their mortgages,” Ms Hale said. |
