| Government Money Should Go To Councils Not Panels |
|
The $2.4 million announced by the government to set up and administer regional planning panels should instead go directly to councils who still carry the workload of development assessments even though elected councils have lost their powers to determine most DAs.

“Regional Planning Panels are just the latest step in this government’s march towards centralising all planning powers in the hands of the Planning Minister. The majority of panel members are appointed by and answerable to the Minister, yet it is local councils who will continue to bear most of the costs,” said Sylvia Hale, NSW Greens MP and Planning spokesperson.
“I support the call by the Local Government Association for councils to delay nominating representatives to the regional panels. The panels will not serve the interests of local communities, they will serve the interests of a discredited state government.”
“The Minister’s claim that Labor is “creating the best and most efficient planning system in the country” shows she is completely out of touch with reality. The NSW planning system is held in widespread disrepute, marred by outright corruption, millions of dollars in political payments from developers to the major parties and the almost complete exclusion of local communities from any say over development.” |
